Breaking News: Boys Do Less, Get Paid More
I've read a million studies that show that women do more than their fair share of housework. But this new study from the Univerity of Michigan Institute For Social Research (Go BLUE!) about what kids do around the house really showed me how far we still have to go. Some of the findings:
°Girls spend more time doing housework than they do playing, while boys spend about 30 percent less time doing household chores and more than twice as much time playing as the girls.
°Girls are less likely to get paid for doing housework. Out of 3000 children between 10 and 17, the boys are 15 percent more likely than girls of the same age to get an allowance for doing household chores.
Since I'm the mom of two boys, I don't have a great point of comparison—would I have them doing more if they were girls? I'll never know for sure. I do try to promote the idea that being a family means everyone has to help out—and I don't give them cash in exchange for doing the laundry, but I hope it's enough—for the sake of their future wives, and for themselves. What do you all think of this? Do you agree with the conclusion of the study: the more things change the more they stay the same? Please discuss.
