Monsters, Inc.

Bonemonseter So my wonderful designer-boyfriend showed me this awesome site the other night.  It’s called Daily Monster, “a growing collection of curious creatures and the stories behind them.”  Basically, it’s this crazy-talented artist who pledged to draw a different monster every day for 100 days and post a video of his creative process (it’s in rapid-speed so you won’t get bored, I promise).  It’s so amazing—he splatters some ink onto a page to start, whips out some different colored markers, and suddenly an animated monster springs to life.  I think my favorite Monster is #100.  The best part is that readers of the blog started to make up and post their own stories about the monsters every day.  The site got me thinking that this would be a fabulous project for your kids.  No—I’m not recommending that you hand your kids a tub of black ink to throw at some paper.  But maybe start with a paint splatter (get lots of newspaper to cover the table) and then give them some markers or crayons to create their very own monster (or “creature” if monster is a bit too scary).  And follow Daily Monster’s post-illustration question: "What’s the Story?"  A project like this is a great way to get your kids’ creative juices flowing—from budding artist to clever fiction author—and make sure you submit any great creatures you create to editors@goodyblog.com.

Hey there. I've been drawing monsters with my kids ever since we found Stefan's website. Great fun. If you don't want to mess with the ink, use his 'open source' monsters. We do both. jm
