Good Deed Friday: Read Books, Plant Trees
We can't stress enough how important it is to read to your kids. But at the same time, it hurts our heart a little bit to think of all the poor trees that give their lives for our love of reading. So now there's a way to ease your conscience. Check out Eco-Libris, a website that will help you "plant one tree for every book you read. "According to them, about 20 Million trees are cut down annually for paper used for the production of books sold in the U.S. alone. Yikes! But at Eco-Libris, you can decide how many books you want to "balance out," and then send them $1 for each book. They take your money and one of their non-profit partners plants a tree in Central America or Africa. Plus, you get a nifty little sticker for your books in the mail that says, "One Tree was planted for this
book." It's only $1 a book... and just think of it as a way to balance out all those trees that were sacrificed to give us Harry Potter! (link thanks to Cool Mom Picks)

Janna,
Thank you for your post!
Speaking of reading to kids, we have today a great recommendation on a new green book for kids on our holiday green gift guide for book lovers - A Hot Planet Needs Cool Kids. The book is written by Julie Hall and illustrated by Sarah Lane.
You are welcome to check it out on our blog at http://ecolibris.blogspot.com/2007/12/hot-planet-needs-cool-kids-holiday.html

That is so neat! Thank you for sharing this link. :)
My university has recently started offering text books in pdf format vs. hard copies. I didn't really think about it being eco-savy until I read this.
