Good Deed Friday: World Water Day
Last year we posted about World Water Day (did anyone take part?), and now, a year later, it's time to celebrate again. This year's WWD will be held on March 22, 2008, and they have their Walk for Water events scheduled for Seattle, New York, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, and other select cities across the country. And, just like last year, if you don't live in any of the cities where real-life events are taking place, you can sign up for the Virtual Walk for Water online. They'll
include your name in a symbolic water jug to be carried by a
participant in one of the local Walk for Water events. There's no money you have to donate—you just have to sign up to show that you care.
World Water Day was started by the UN with the hope to cut in half the number of people who live without sustainable access to safe drinking-water and basic sanitation by 2015. It's inspired by the example of women in water stressed countries who often walk 6 miles each day just to get water for their family. And even though it's hard to image anyone living without the basic need of clean water, more than 1 billion people around the world lack safe drinking water and more than 2.6 billion lack adequate sanitation services.
"We shall not finally defeat AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria, or any of the other infectious diseases that plague the developing world until we have also won the battle for safe drinking-water, sanitation and basic health care."
- Kofi Annan, former United Nations Secretary-General

Good Deed Day seems like a nice thing.
Check out www.kiva.org
and pay it forward. Today, I bought a gift cert
from Kiva for a sick friend instead of flowers.
She will be able to choose the recipient that she would like to donate to.

Thank you the World Water Day Awareness Blog-I work for a watershed committee in the Midwest and our global water resources are shrinking even in the United States. God Bless those who live without clean water and may we better use our water resources and help those who struggle.
