Dads Getting into the A-C-T-I-O-N!

I know it's our big Mother's Day celebration this week, but I just had to post these really cute Fatherhood Involvement ad campaigns that I saw on BB-Blog. Very adorable! Plus, such a great message:

A majority of Americans have identified the absence of the father from the home as the most significant family or social problem facing America—this campaign demonstrates the critical role fathers play in their children’s lives, and provides information on becoming a better dad.

I know modern day dads are already super involved and wonderful parents, but I guess it's always nice to see the spotlight on their very important role in kids' lives. Plus, dads doing cheerleading will always make me smile!

Aah, Go Take a Hike!

36060992_sjsnum On Earth Day, it's totally appropriate to focus on environmentally friendly products, habits, and the like. I love new gadgets and energy-saving technology as much as the next geek. But I'd rather skip all that and go right to the pith of the day: Enjoying and exploring nature. Without experiencing the world as it is, with all its wonder and color, the message of Earth Day seems severely lacking at best.

And, in my opinion, the best way to do this is to take a hike. A good hike is the perfect weekend day trip, especially as the weather gets warmer. The trail is not just a destination, it's a classroom, an art museum, a workshop, and a playground. Showing your kids the splendor of the out-of-doors is easy when you're surrounded by it.

Most likely, there's hiking closer than you think. For example, there's excellent hiking only about 20-30 minutes northwest of New York at the Palisades Interstate Park in New Jersey. Considering the stereotypes both NYC and Jersey have, if we can find beautiful hiking, so can you.

Online, there are plenty of resources available. The National Park Service and your state park's web site has plenty of information and ideas on where to go. In addition, most states have hiking or trail clubs. These are excellent resources to tap into. Not only do they offer maps, books, and other information, they offer opportunities for group hiking, volunteer projects, activism, and more.

So this Earth Day, plant a tree, recycle, and consider planning a hiking trip with your family.

The Secret Underground Hannah Montana Society

423268710_da8ca14215_m_3Anyone who follows this blog knows that my 6-year-old niece has already infected me with a bad case of High School Musical fever. Yes, I am certain that I am the only person over the age of 11 who describes "You Are the Music In Me" to friends as "haunting." (It'd be funny if it weren't true.)

As it turns out, my sweet, little Niecey Botwin was, in true drug pusher form, just starting me out on the soft stuff to get me hooked and comin' back for more: This past Thanksgiving weekend at home has left me with a full blown Hannah Montana habit. (Oh, how did I not see THAT coming?)

"Best of Both Worlds"? Brilliant. My favorite, "Nobody's Perfect"? A timeless masterpiece that I can't get out of my head: "Nobody's perfect. I gotta work it, again and again, til I get it right." I mean, it's spooky. It's like she knows me!

Time to fess up, all you achy breaky parents and former fans of Miley Cyrus's dad, Billy Ray. Mullets unite!! Admit you're a big ol' Momtana … and that you would've killed to have been on Oprah last week when the big O surprised everyone with a Miley/Hannah appearance)!

"I Cannot Live Without Books." -Thomas Jefferson

"No doubt, Tom. When you don't have common sense, books certainly help!"Mydadsageekgreennew
–John O'Sullivan

My wife is now a little less than three months pregnant. We're both excited for the first trimester to be over. Not only is every day forward another day less till our baby is born, it's also one day less of the first trimester. Our little strawberry-sized kid is kicking my wife's butt. I've never seen her so tired.

I have no previous knowledge about what to expect during pregnancy, so I didn't know if this was normal. And why would I? Much of my brain's space has been taken up by dumb Internet mêmes, InDesign keyboard shortcuts, and lyrics from New Wave bands of the 1980s. So, to fill the gap, I do what any good geek does: I read. And Parents certainly has plenty of help in that department.
