It seems Goodyblog has been rather quiet lately about our eternal love for the cupcake. Have no doubt, they are still our pastry of choice. I came across this great how-to set today on Oh Joy!. The Cupcake Kit, By Elinor Klivans, comes complete with everything you need to make scrumptious cupcakes: 14 recipes, 250 decorative cup liners in two sizes, a pastry bag, and an assortment of piping tips for creating one-of-a-kind masterpieces.

It's almost worth it just for those precious liners. Available at Amazon.com.

Massive R2-D2 Cake!

Img_2076forbenWhat needs to be said? It's an R2-D2 birthday cake. A brilliant professional baker named Mark Joseph made this cake for a boy's birthday. And I don't think I can improve upon that description. Of course, there's no way I'd be able to make this cake without it crashing into a cakey avalanche, but it's still amazing nonetheless.

What's more, the whole thing is edible—including the legs. The "trash can" section of R2 is made from red velvet cake. The legs are made out of Rice Krispie treats. And the whole thing is filled with win and awesome.

Edible Art

Cake decorating can be way-intimidating (have you ever attempted to wield a piping bag?)—and staring at a blank sheet cake makes my head spin with the possibilities. I love love love this idea from Bakerella—when you are in need of inspiration, take it from your kids. Lay wax paper over your child's drawing and use candy writers as markers to trace their doodles and designs. Place the tray of cake ornaments in the freezer to harden, and voila! Insta-masterpiece. Totally amazing. Totally genius.

Thanks, Crafty Crow, for the link!

(and p.s...Love the blue sky cake tier. Brilliant touch!)

The Giant Cupcake Strikes Back!!

Cupakecollage
Ever since we blogged about the infamous Wilton giant cupcake cake pan, our readers have been whipping up their own. It's been awhile since we've shared their (seriously impressive) baking skillz, so we bring you eight more examples of rockin' reader giant cupcakes.

  • Adrienne Tsang shares an awesome tip: "I froze the 2 pieces overnight before trimming the top/bottom so they would sit flat. It also helped to have it frozen for the frosting process." Good to know!
  • Jenny Lee says "All in all it was much easier than I would've thought! My son was especially AMAZED at his mommy's skills. For now I will hide my cupcake pan and let him think his mommy is truly amazing!"
  • Roxanne Blake made her giant cupcake for her daughter's first birthday, and says "Everyone loved it!"
  • Katherine Loflin had never baked a cake in a mold before, but says it turned out "so cute!"
  • Kimberly Hoerner let her daughter call the shots: "My daughter asked for this cake for her birthday and she sat there and told me how she wanted it decked out."
  • Michele Myers is a pro: This is her second attempt at the big guy. The first time she used the recipe that came with the pan, but this time she went for a boxed cake mix.

Rockin' Reader: Awesome Giant Cupcake

Firstbirthdaycupcake2_2

Presenting Elaine Ashton's work of art! Here's what she had to say

I saw the cake on the GoodyBlog and had to have one even though I need another specialty baking pan like I need less sleep, but I thought it would be a fun cake to make for my daughter's first birthday. It turned out really well and, although she didn't seem all that enthused about a chocolate cake, my husband and I enjoyed it. :) It's a fun pan that remarkably bakes both sides evenly in spite of the difference in shape and volume in the two halves. Lots of fun making it. Thanks so much for the idea!

Rockin Reader: Another Giant Cupcake!

Kks_cake

Lorna Hall writes: Here is the picture of my cupcake-cake. It was so fun and my daughter loved it! We used red velvet cake on the bottom and strawberry on the top. To cut we left the cakes together and just made tall slivers. FABULOUS!!!
