Live From Toy Fair: More Legos!

Starwars To go along with Amanda's post about LEGO Indiana Jones (by the way, Indie is EVERYWHERE at toy fair—expect Indie inspired toys of every creation), check out this photo I took of LEGO Star Wars. It's just so impressive what those people can do with legos! But I guess it's official—the movies of our childhood are BACK!

Happy Birthday, LEGO!

Legocake_2

The ubiquitous and beloved LEGO brick turns 50 today. To celebrate, LEGO artist (yes that's really his job) Sean Kenney whipped up this birthday cake just for the occasion. Don't miss the rest of Sean's work, which is pretty mind-blowing.

Happy Birthday, LEGO. We love ya!

Serious Lego Sorting Skillz

For those of you who live lego-lives (like me!) Evil Mad Scientist has an amazing post about how to keep it organized. The above is his "before" shot (okay, in my house that would be an "after" as I am kind of thrilled if the lego isn't on the floor) and then EMS gives a step-by-step on how to store every type of brick. Here's what you do with the little pieces.

OMG! And believe me, that's just the beginning. Would I let my kid ever touch the lego again after I did all that? No, but I think he would understand. Go read the whole post to see the system at work.

The Coolest Thing I've Seen All Week

When the OK Go video for "Here It Goes Again" came out, I thought it was amazing and hysterical at the same time.  Well... it's even better with LEGOS! (via supertaster)

PS—How much do you love that we have an entire "LEGO" category?

PPS—If you've never seen the original, it's awesome and you should definitely watch it here.

Happy Belated Birthday LEGO!!!

LegoI was so busy yesterday that I forgot to say Happy 75th Birthday to LEGO! To celebrate, here are five fascinating facts about our favorite building toy.

1. Almost 4 Billion LEGO elements have been manufactured since 1949

2. There are 915 million ways to combine SIX LEGO Bricks

3. Children spend 5 billion hours a year playing with LEGO

4. There's an average of 62 LEGO bricks for every person on earth (ed note: my household has way more than it's share)

5. Laid end to end the number of LEGO bricks sold in a year would go around the world more than five times.

Lego Takes The Cake

LegostorecakeYay! I love this lego cake/jello mold! I think it would actually be cooler to use this as a jello mold—'cause I still like the old school DIY kind of lego cakes (they're pretty much just a loaf cake with mini cupcakes on top). Thanks to My Mom Shops for finding this.

More Lego Love

LegokeychainIn my family Lego rules! I think this little key organizer is about the most perfect example of Lego form meeting Lego function. Before I saw this, I thought that these Lego fridge magnets were the apotheosis of Lego swag:

MagnetIt maybe hard to tell from this picture but each brick is a mighty fridge magnet. And the great thing is, while you're cooking dinner the kids can play build with them. You can get them both at the Lego store. But if you really want to go all out, visit the mothership LEGOLAND Billund, in Denmark. I took my kids there, and we had the 360 Lego experience by even staying at the Hotel Lego Land. Now this is not some ordinary theme park experience. The hotel is imbued with a an ultra Scandinavian Modern ethos—but with Lego everywhere. Check out the sheets on the beds. Or signage for the rooms:

Because this is Denmark and not America, the hotel thoughtfully gives you a pager for your kid so while he's playing in the hotel Lego pit, you can sit upstairs in the swanky bar and drink a couple of three Tuborgs. I'm just saying that if you love the Lego, you have to go on the pilgrimage. Skal!
